Manchester United’s quest to completely revamp their engine room has hit another significant speed bump this summer.
In what is turning out to be a frustratingly stagnant transfer window for Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the INEOS hierarchy, the Red Devils have seen yet another primary midfield target slip through their fingers, leaving manager Michael Carrick facing an uphill battle ahead of the new campaign.
The latest domino effect in European football has dealt a major blow to United’s recruitment plans. Reports linking Spanish midfielder Rodri with a high-profile move to Barcelona—choosing the Catalan giants over Real Madrid—have effectively shut the door on Old Trafford’s dream move for either Aurélien Tchouaméni or Eduardo Camavinga.
Real Madrid had initially considered offloading one of their star French midfielders to fund a move for Rodri, but with that pathway now blocked, both Tchouaméni and Camavinga are set to remain in the Spanish capital.
“It had been anticipated that United would bring in a third new midfielder to supplement their squad, but staff are considering where to next put their resources as negotiations stall.”
A Growing List of Missed Opportunities
For INEOS, failing to land a marquee midfield anchor represents a worrying pattern in a crucial window. While United has brought in Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos, they have repeatedly missed out on top-tier targets capable of providing long-term elite transformation:
- Elliot Anderson: United balked at matching the steep asking price required to lure him away, allowing rivals Manchester City to swoop in.
- Enzo Fernandes: Long-standing interest faded as financial constraints and structure demands took priority.
- Sandro Tonali: Explored as a high-grade option to bolster defensive transition, but talks failed to progress into concrete bids.
- Carlos Baleba: Brighton’s staggering valuation proved to be a permanent roadblock for United’s negotiation team.
- Alex Scott & Manu Koné: Despite heavy scouting and reported player interest, United have hesitated to pull the trigger on definitive deals, leaving both Bournemouth and AS Roma holding onto their stars.
With Mason Mount recently picking up an injury during pre-season preparation against Paris Saint-Germain, Carrick’s tactical options in midfield are looking dangerously thin. If INEOS cannot pivot quickly and secure a decisive signing before the transfer window closes, Manchester United risks entering the new season with familiar vulnerabilities right at the heart of their pitch.
