Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has revealed the reason why he didn’t join Manchester United in 2011.
The 32-year-old Belgian goalkeeper recently had an interview with Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand and he made a shocking revelation about the club he supported growing up and what stopped him from playing for the Red Devils.
Thibaut Courtois is regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the world and was outstanding during his time in the Premier League at Chelsea. He had a very good career at Atletico Madrid, and now Real Madrid.
Manchester United has had some world class goalkeepers at the club over the past years and Thibaut Courtois would have been on that list should the club opt for him as Edwin van Der Sar’s replacement.
Is Thibaut Courtois a Manchester United fan?
Yes, in an interview with Rio Ferdinand, Thibaut Courtois said he was a Man United fan and loved Manchester United legend Edwin van Der Sar and Iker Casillas. He also claimed that he used to follow both Manchester United and Real Madrid because of the two goalkeepers.
What stopped Courtois from signing for Man United?
Thibaut Courtois was doing great at Belgian club Genk during the 2011 transfer window, the goalkeeper had offers from top Premier League clubs including Tottenham and Chelsea, but the Blues had the best project at that time and he joined them. Manchester United had signed David de Gea from La Liga giants Atletico Madrid and that stopped him from joining the Red Devils.
However, the departure of David de Gea from Atletico Madrid in 2011 opened the door for him to join the Spanish club on loan from Chelsea.
Will Thibaut Courtois play for Manchester United?
Thibaut Courtois is only 32 years old which is a very good age for a goalkeeper and he has a contract until June 2026 with Real Madrid. Manchester United have been strongly linked with a lot of goalkeepers over the past few months/weeks and a move for Courtois can not be ruled out especially after he came out claiming that he used to be a Man United fan.
Andre Onana is still struggling to find form at Manchester United since joining the club under Erik ten Hag, the club may decide to replace him in the summer with a top goalkeeper if he continues with his errors.
Thibaut Courtois is a world class goalkeeper and one of the best in his generation and could be open to a move back in the Premier League if Manchester United approaches him.
